SSTI PROGRAMS
Design
your
future.
Explore technical theatre through a week of collaborative design projects, professional mentorship, and a firsthand look at tech week.
The Process
Tech on Deck puts you on a student design team for one week at SSTI. You’ll develop a mock production design package with guidance from working professionals, exploring the creative, practical, and financial decisions that happen before the first lumber is purchased or the first light is hung.
Developing a Design
Your student design team begins by selecting and analyzing a script for production. Classes introduce common design tools like research boards, renderings, budget worksheets, fabric samples, and scale models. During dedicated collaboration time, you’ll apply those skills to your group’s design package, making creative decisions with guidance from SSTI’s educators and production designers.
Dive Into Tech Week
While developing your own designs, you’ll shadow professional designers in your areas of interest during SSTI’s production tech week. Working in the same facility as our four-week students, you’ll see how design decisions hold up onstage and how departments work together to make adjustments.
Present Your Work
The week concludes with group design presentations to the SSTI company, where you’ll explain your choices, discuss your process, and take questions. You’ll leave with experience developing and defending ideas and making design choices as part of a team, preparing you to take greater responsibility in your school’s productions.
