This Isn't Camp.
After thirteen unforgettable summers, SSTI's nationally ranked summer intensive is embarking into exciting new territory. We've changed countless lives over the years, and we're not letting Covid-19 stop YOU! With an army of elite educators, fresh off a semester of online teaching, we're hitting back with SSTI Online! We've developed an online curriculum that targets specific, achievable educational goals that can be measured by our staff in this new medium. This isn't an exercise in improv. Our program has been carefully restructured to emulate as much of the original experience as possible, while also adding many new elements afforded by this medium.
We're not just filling time. We're continuing our fulfillment of our greater mission to shape young professionals and outstanding humans.
Don't Miss Our Virtual Debut!
SSTI Online Steps Center Stage for Summer 2020
You may have applied in October, or maybe you just found us. Either way, we're excited to share with you our plans for transitioning our life-changing SSTI Musical Theatre and SSTI Tech experiences online for Summer 2020.
It might be hard to imagine SSTI without the special world that we create on-campus. We get that, but we're excited for this new opportunity to help you grow on a more individualized basis.
SSTI Online allows us to add to the already dynamic programming of SSTI Musical Theatre and SSTI Tech with:
Private voice instruction for each student
More guest instructors from Colleges and Broadway
Small group acting and monologue instruction (MT)
Professional software training and design work (Tech)
The same SSTI family bond, complete with fruit snacks*
The choice to move SSTI Online didn't come without great thought and discussion. We've spent thirteen summers building a world class professional theatre training program and refuse to sully that reputation with a 'placeholder' program this summer. We stand ready to provide knowledge, value, and support for our young people this summer as we grow together, while we're apart.
*You'll soon learn that SSTI students run on passion, Patti Lupone memes, and Mott's Fruit Snacks. #SponsorUsMotts
From award winning Broadway guests to educators from the top colleges and universities, our staff is unmatched. We put them in the same (virtual) room with you! Only the most outstanding educators work in small groups and one-on-one with our aspiring young professionals on a daily basis. Our staff is extraordinary in their talent and abilities, but most importantly they possess the nurturing spirit to inspire and ignite it within others.
Every student at SSTI, from youngest to oldest, has a desire to pursue musical theatre or technical theatre in college. At SSTI Musical Theatre, you will extensively coach audition material and work with our staff of professors that stand ready to answer your many questions, including the filming and critiquing of prescreens. As a SSTI Tech student, you'll spend time crafting portfolios and websites ahead of a series of mock interviews, in preparation for college and job interviews.
At SSTI, family is key. This bond is what makes SSTI stand out in the hearts of alumni for a lifetime. It's also created by SSTI's dedication to small sessions. SSTI Online remains committed to a max capacity of 26 students per musical theatre session and 15 per tech session. We'll even create private groups ahead of summer for the students to get to know each other, and perhaps even isolate together to attend SSTI Online in the same room!
In-person or online, we still eat, sleep, and breathe musical theatre. 4-6 hours a day, five days a week.
As with our traditional schedule, the day will begin with 'Circle Time', followed by a group warmup to get our bodies awake and moving together. You'll then rotate within small groups to individual courses (some required, some elective), taking breaks for lunch.
Some course topics include:
Fundamentals of Acting the Song
Musical Theatre Dance (variety of styles)
Vocal Technique (private and small group)
Movement and Physicality
Musical Theatre History
Creating Characters within New Works
College Auditions and Prescreen Coaching
You will even have an opportunity to present self-filmed prescreens (after much discussion and technical advice) and have them critiqued by actual college admissions staff!
In addition to guest instructors, you'll have daily, hands-on engagement with a curriculm designed by professors from three of the most prestigious musical theatre programs in the nation. These three SSTI Musical Theatre Online leaders are so excited to spend two weeks with you:
You will also leave with a personalized written summary of goals and reminders to take with you into the next school year, be that high school or your freshman year in college.
The world of professional tech theatre becomes more reliant on digital design and programming expertise with each passing day. The fact that we're able to hold an entire Tech program online is a testament to that! With SSTI Tech online, the same staff that works with our students in person will get to take a much deeper dive into the world of digital design, drafting, and programming.
SSTI Tech already has the distinction of being the only program of its caliber. And with our unique focus on college interviews and preparedness, our students often find themselves with many (sometimes double digit) offers for the college tech theatre programs of their dreams. This process will remain unchanged and transition comfortably to an online format, likely mirroring many of the online interviews students will participate in during the future.
SSTI's Tech Education directors from each campus are developing a curriculum that harnesses the skill sets of our vast array of technical artists on staff, while also considering the specific interests of the students involved. You can expect a vast array of options and electives. While you will have the ability to harness in on your specific interests, you will also experience a comprehensive and broad technical education that is most attractive to colleges and universities. We'll even be working with the designers of our two (now theoretical) summer productions to understand the design process, allowing students to create their own variations.
Examples of course options include:
Resume and Portfolio Creation
Choosing the Right School/Career
From Page to Stage: Production Management
Stage Management Bootcamp
Rigging Math and Ropes 101
Advanced Scene Shop Tips and Tricks
CAD Drafting: Focus on AutoCad, Vectorworks, and SketchUp
